Benefits of Black Currants
Share
Black currants are a nutrient-dense "superfood", being the highest known food source of Omega 6 Fatty acids and a powerhouse of vitamin C and anthocyanins. While omega-6 fatty acids are often associated with inflammation, it is crucial to understand that certain omega-6 fatty acids, such as gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) found in berries like currants, are anti-inflammatory. The fruit can be used for juice, jam, and extracts to boost antioxidants. Leaves can be used in tea for their anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and anti-allergic properties. The seed oil, rich in GLA, is used for anti-inflammatory purposes.
Traditionally, blackcurrants were eaten freely to help prevent miscarriage. In the old days, blackcurrant puree used to be available in pharmacies.
Other traditional medicinal uses for currants, especially black currants, are for immune support, inflammation reduction, cardiovascular health, arthritis, vision, glaucoma, high cholesterol, treating infections, colds, sore throats, mouth ailments, gum strengthening, fevers, flu, anaemia, miscarriage prevention, pregnancy disorders, dysentery, rheumatic pain, joint pain, high blood pressure, vein strengthening, dry eye, eye fatigue, dark adaptation, UTI’s, oedema, digestive health, eczema, skin health, stroke prevention, anti-aging, cancer, and more.
