Feijoa

Feijoa

Feijoa (Feijoa sellowiana) is one of the latest ripening fruits, typically ready early winter.
Feijoa is rich in vitamin C, folate, iodine, potassium, antioxidants and fibre, which protect cells from damage, aids digestion as well as supporting immune function and cardiovascular health.
Its peels and leaves are strongly antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, especially gastric cancers.
Studies suggest that essential oils in the peel inhibit bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus. Feijoa peel extract has significant anti-inflammatory effects, potentially stronger than some commercial medications, making it useful for conditions like inflammatory bowel disease.
Traditionally Feijoa has been used medicinally for digestive issues, management of blood sugar, constipation, winter immune support, weight loss, diabetes, skin wounds, natural deodorant, diarrhoea, goitre, hyperthyroidism, cataracts, macular degeneration, heart health, cancer, pregnancy, anti-aging and much more.
Here is another good reason why it’s good to eat a well varied seasonal diet, to eat ourselves well.
