Figs

Figs

Figs (Ficus carica), are incredibly delicious and nutritious. The fruit, leaves and sap are all edible and are rich in fibre and antioxidants.
The fruit is eaten, leaves used as a tea and latex or sap applied topically.
The young leaves add a coconut/walnut/vanilla flavour to food and are an excellent source of calcium, iron, phosphorus, manganese, sodium, potassium, vitamins A, B1 and B2. They are awesome used as a food wrap (either cooked or raw) and have been used as such since 3rd Century BC. The leaves also make a great spinach alternative.
Studies show that regular consumption of figs can reduce insulin needs, while also lowering triglycerides.
Figs have been used traditionally medicinally to treat constipation, diabetes, high cholesterol, eczema, mild laxative, IBS, metabolic health, digestion, respiratory congestion, blood sugar regulation, dermatitis, warts, corns, calluses, bronchitis, coughs, sore throats, improved fertility, liver and bladder inflammation, anaemia and much more.
What a truly delicious way to eat ourselves well.
